Margins

Video Photo Info
Margins is a generative sculpture that explores the intersection of streaming visual culture with minimalism, merging seemingly opposing elements into a provocative tension.

In its form, the artwork adopts the cleanliness and simplicity of minimalism, with precise lines and sharp geometry reminiscent of Donald Judd’s creations. The visual starkness of the sculpture is disrupted through the introduction of abstracted generative animations sourced from streaming pornographic videos, injecting the artwork with a raw carnality.

The fractured structure of the piece, divided in clear levels, mirrors the fragmented nature of contemporary aesthetic experiences, oscillating between the realms of high and low culture, abstraction and realism. Margins invites viewers to explore the edges of their own perception, as well as inviting them to renegotiate their relationship with art history.

Margins is part of an unfolding new series by Studio Daniel Canogar that confronts minimalist sculpture with banal streaming video feeds that include city surveillance videos, 24/7 sports broadcasting and live YouTube plane-spotting footage.
